Eilerman Sentenced to 7 Years

July 1, 2015-

Twenty-four year-old Derek Eilerman of St. Marys was sentenced yesterday to seven years in prison and five years mandatory community control for starting a fire in December that left Jeffrey Scott Hughes, 50, dead.  Eilerman entered no contest pleas to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated arson charges.  The fire occurred about 4 am on December 7th and involved a two-story duplex occupied by 14 people.  Thirteen of the fourteen were rescued by Sidney Police and Firefighters, along with area residents. Sidney Police reported the fire appeared to have been the result of a "prank" rather than an "intent to harm".  Eilerman used a very dangerous firework-type device in starting the fire.
