E Cigs harmful to Pets

September 15, 2014-

While e-cigarettes are gaining popularity, they have a harmful downside for pets.  The flavored liquid contains almost 10 times as much nicotine as cigarettes and an enticing aroma that attracts pets.

The Pet Poison Hotline has reported an increase in calls about pets getting into e-cigarettes.Pets may eat the cartridges that e-cigarette juice comes in, ingesting harmful nicotine and possibly damaging their esophagus, stomach and intestinal track as a result of sharp edges of chewed cartridges.

"Just like you baby proof your house, you should pet proof,"  said April Shattuck, a veterinarian at West Central Ohio Veterinary Emergency Services.
